Earth Day at Circle Creek: a North Coast Celebration
Saturday, April 24, 9:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M., NCLC's Circle Creek Conservation Center
Join North Coast Land Conservancy on Saturday, April 24 for an Earth Day celebration at our Conservation Center at Circle Creek in Seaside. From seed starting to tree planting, tours of the Sitka spruce forest to tours of amphibian habitats, there will be activities for people of all ages looking to honor Earth Day by connecting with this beautiful and unique landscape on Oregons North Coast.
A pre-event ceremony, The Forest Remembers, will take place at 9:30 a.m. on behalf of all those who have made contributions to NCLC in memory of a loved one. We will gather in a special grove of 90-year-old Sitka spruce trees to read aloud the names of those who have been honored with memorial gifts to the conservancy. All are welcome: those who have made memorial gifts, friends and loved ones of those being honored, and anyone else wishing to honor with your presence those people we will remember this day.
Events for Earth Day at Circle Creek begin at 10:00 a.m. Gather in the Big Barn for refreshments, great displays and a hands-on seed starting project that will give you a potential plant to take home and nurture for your edible garden. At 10:30 a.m. choose between several field programs giving you an up-close look at this beautiful 364 acre property: tour the Sitka spruce forest with Neal Maine, learn about the extensive native re-forestation plantings that have taken place at Circle Creek as part of our habitat development plans with NCLC Executive Director Katie Voelke, or go hunting for amphibians and learn more about their habitat with local ecologist Mike Patterson.
At noon, well have a break for the NCLC barbeque! NCLC board and committee members will man the grills for a great mid-day meal. Suggested donation for the barbeque is $4, or feel free to bring your own sack lunch and join in the picnic, and get to know your fellow outdoor enthusiasts better.
At 1:00 p.m., NCLC Stewardship Director Celeste Coulter will lead us in a tree planting project, as we add to the over 8,000 native trees and shrubs that have been planted at Circle Creek in the last five years. What better way to honor the Earth, and this beautiful North Coast than by planting trees that will live in perpetuity on conserved land? Bring gloves if you have them- tools will be provided.
This event is free of charge, and takes place mostly outdoors, so dress appropriately for the days weather. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for the field programs. Please leave your pets at home.
