Into the Woods

Saturday June 12, 10 A.M. - 12 P.M., The Reserve at Gearhart

Explore the wonders of an ancient riparian forest. Walk across carpets of false lily as NCLC Conservation Director Neal Maine shows us some of the secrets of this forest system, including many of the most unusual trees to be found anywhere on the North Coast. This forest is a bit of unexpected wilderness that lies between the Reserve and Shamrock Pines developments in Gearhart, and encompasses some vital wildlife habitat along Neacoxie creek. Learn from an expert about the important link this forest provides the larger habitat corridor known as the Neacoxie Wildlife Corridor.

Directions: Take highway 101 to Highland Lane / Del Rey Beach access, 1 mile north of Gearhart. Go west on Highland Road and look for the sign on the left directing you to the unimproved parking area for the walk. If you get to the Reserve or Highlands, you've gone too far [click for map].

Dress for the weather and bring sturdy shoes or boots. The distance is not far and the ground is generally level but could be soggy, and there is no defined trail. Please leave pets at home.

And be sure to check out our other upcoming events here.

North Coast Land Conservancy's Gateway to Discovery field programs provide an entry point to Oregon's coastal riches -- birding, geology, and a salmon rich watershed. These programs serve the community and its visitors by extending beyond the walls of any building. Come walk in an ancient spruce forest, learn about local birding in a restored estuarine lake, watch for bald eagles while the tides come and go, learn about the region's natural, cultural, and historical resources.
