Off-Channel Salmon Habitat Development in Coastal River Systems (or, 'What is that Strange Project with the Upside Down Trees out on Hwy 26?')

Indoor presentation Wednesday January 20, 7:00 P.M. Seaside Public Library
Field program & tree-planting Saturday January 23, 10:00 A.M., US 26 MP 1

Were you driving along Highway 26 between Klootchy Creek Park and the Junction late last summer and wondering, "What ARE they building out there in that pasture with all the earth moving and..are those upside-down trees sticking up there?"

click for more info Well, wonder no more. On Wednesday, January 20 at 7:00 pm the Listening to the Land program at the Seaside Public Library brings together Joe Sheehan (Oregon Fish & Wildlife) and Doug Ray (Carex Consulting) to talk about the most asked about habitat development project on the North Coast.

Last summer, the Nietzel family of Seaside generously allowed the construction of an enormous off-channel wetland complex in their pasture along the Necanicum River. These complex wetland habitats provide a critical element of salmon habitat that has been largely lost from our coastal ecosystem— a place where young salmon can escape from the velocity of winter river flows that might flush them out into the salt water estuary before they are ready to make the change.

Joe and Doug will talk about the design and construction of the project, and answer all your burning questions about the upside-down trees!

Then join us on Saturday, January 23 at 10:00 am for a tour of the project site. Plan to stay and plant some native trees and shrubs, helping to establish important riparian habitat around the off-channel wetland. The site is just north of US Highway 26 at mile 1.5. Be sure to dress for the weather, and for getting dirty planting trees! Rubber boots or water resistant shoes are advised for walking around the site. Bring gloves if you have them, tools will be provided.
